THE KEYS

CLARENCE S. HIGGS MEMORIAL BEACH
Key West. Also known as County Beach, this strip of beach is one-half mile west of Smathers Beach on Atlantic Blvd. near the south end of White Street. Swimming, a great pier, recreational facilities for children and free tennis courts are located just across the street.


C B. HARVEY REST BEACH PARK
Key West. Next to Clarence S. Higgs Memorial Beach.
Newly designed and landscaped, this park is located on the Atlantic Ocean near White St. Pier. This is a great location for watching the amazing colors of our sunrise. This beach is about 300 yards long and provides five picnic areas.


DRY TORTUGAS NATIONAL PARK
About 70 miles west of Key West, this park is accessible by scheduled ferry service or chartered seaplane. Activities include diving, snorkeling, bird watching and exploration of Fort Jefferson National Monument.


FORT ZACHARY TAYLOR STATE HISTORIC PARK
Key West, 305-292-6713. Enter through Truman Annex on Southard Street.
The fort is great inside (where you can step back into Key West's fascinating history) and out (where you can enjoy what locals call "the best beach in Key West"). Picnic or fish here.


SMATHERS BEACH
Key West. Just west of the airport on S. Roosevelt Blvd.
One of Key West's longest beaches. Picnic areas, restroom facilities, a volleyball net and watersports.


SOUTH BEACH
Key West. Found at the end of Duval Street. It is a small public beach with picnic tables. Bathroom facilities are available.
DOG BEACH
Wadell and Vernon Avenues
A tiny beach bewteen a private home and Louie's Backyard for dogs and their owners.


EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA BEACHES


DAYTONA BEACH
Daytona Beaches
State Road A1A
I-95 to U.S. Highway 92, also called International Speedway Boulevard, east to State RoadvA1A. From A1A, look for beach-ramp signs.
From Daytona Beach to Granada Boulevard (State Road 40) in Ormond Beach, visitors can drive and park on the beach for $5 daily. Beach concessions. Lifeguards. 10 mph speed strictly enforced.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH
South of Daytona
Lifeguards, concessions, showers and restrooms.
I-95 to the State Road 44 exit, east on S.R. 44 across the Intracoastal Waterway. (Toll is $5 per car). Parking lots at Flagler Avenue and 27th Avenue, and at the Smyrna Dunes Park near Ponce DeLeon Inlet and Mary McLeod Bethune Park in Bethune Beach.

CAPE CANAVERAL
Playalinda Beach
Canaveral National Seashore
24 miles of open beach.
State Road 50 east to U.S. Highway 1 at Titusville and then go north to State Road 402. Go east on S.R. 402 7 miles to beach.
Free parking. Beach closes three days before and the day of a shuttle launch. Nude bathing north of dune Crossover 13.

COCOA BEACH
Space Coast
6-mile stretch of white sandy beaches. Beeline Expressway (State Road 528) to State Road A1A and turn south. Toll.
All-day parking, metered parking along side streets. Lifeguards at Lori Wilson Park beginning Memorial Day weekend. Restaurants and hotels.

WEST CENTRAL FLORIDA BEACHES


St. Petersburg area
This section of Gulf coastline defines the western edge of Pinellas (PY-nellis) County for more than 23 miles. Check the map on the right.
Caladesi Island. Reached only by pontoon ferry, this 3-mile-long, untouched barrier island is near Dunedin, toward the northern edge of the county.
Sand Key. Just a few miles south of Caladesi, this smallish park fulfills the dream of a tropical paradise.

Fort DeSoto Park
Seven sprawling miles of beach and recreation area; an old historic fort, with overnight camping, lots of barbecue grills and picnic tables under shade pines, the occasional raccoon and snake..
Exit Interstate 275 at State Road 682. Turn south on State Road 679. Two tolls. Paved trails; bike rentals, snack bars, boat ramps, picnic areas with grills, rest rooms, free parking and camping (with reservations).

Pass-a-Grille
A national historic district with quaint beachside hotels and the pink Don CeSar, with a 1920s-era four-star Mediterranean hotel. Funky beach fun. I-275 at State Road 682, west to the beaches.

Clearwater Area
Sand Key Park
I-275 to State Road 60, west to Clearwater Beach. Or take I-275 to State Road 688 in St. Petersburg and turn north on Gulf Boulevard.
Wide beaches, covered picnic areas. Grills, restrooms, metered parking. For the college crowd, it's Clearwater Beach (north of Sand Key).
